IRVINE Rams receiver Cooper Kupp left their training camp practice with a hamstring injury on Tuesday night, and the team is uncertain how long he will be sidelined.

The former Super Bowl MVP was running red-zone routes with the rest of the receivers when he came up short. He left the field under his own power with trainers about 30 minutes into the two-hour workout at UC Irvine and did not return to the field.

Head coach Sean McVay said he had not spoken to the training staff to learn the nature or extent of the injury when he met with the media.

I just know they told me he was out for practice, McVay said.

A team spokesperson confirmed the diagnosis to reporters later Tuesday.

Kupp missed the final eight games last season after suffering a high ankle sprain that required offseason tightrope surgery. He was limited during the Rams offseason camps but had been a full participant through the first five practices of training camp, looking like his old self with highlight catches only he could make.

The seventh-year receiver said last week he wasnt sure whether he had reached his previous levels or not, but he was enjoying the signs of progress.

Even just from the first day to the second day, things definitely have started to be like, okay, now were back into the groove, seeing things and being able to react off them, Kupp said. Theres nothing like playing competitive football. You cant simulate it, you know? Obviously, I havent done it since November, so its been a while, but itll come back fast.

Kupp won the NFLs triple crown of receiving in 2021, leading the league in catches (145), yards receiving (1,947) and touchdown catches (16). He starred again during the Rams playoff run, culminating in two touchdown catches in the Super Bowl, including the game-winner with 1:25 left.

He had 75 catches for 812 yards and six touchdowns in only nine games last season before his ankle sprain.

But now Kupp and the Rams, who are scheduled for just a walk-through on Wednesday before returning to practice Thursday, will have to wait and see the extent of this latest injury.

You have to be able to move on, McVay said. I hope hes ok but you gotta be able to go practice, guys have to be able to step up.

Kupps absence allowed more space for the competitors in the battle for the third receiver job.

Rookie Puka Nacua had another strong day, coming down with some tough passes and drawing a defensive pass interference call on a long ball. Fourth-year receiver Tutu Atwell brought in a pass across the middle in heavy traffic.

All are vying for the trust of McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford that they can make plays when the Rams reach game action.

For us, were just looking for guys that know where theyre supposed to be, are going to play with great energy, great detail, and then trust their skills when the balls in the air to go out there and make big plays, Stafford said. Weve got a bunch of guys that are doing that right now and looking forward to giving them more opportunities.

Overall, though, McVay wasnt pleased with the Rams performance during their second day of padded practices.

We got a really long way to go, McVay volunteered at the end of a response to a question about outside linebacker Byron Young. Today was not very good overall. I thought we were very sloppy, not sharp on both sides of the football. If we want to continue to try to do the things were doing and take steps in the right direction, we gotta be better than we were today.

He pointed to issues with blocking and route running on offense, and rush integrity and coverage discipline on defense, then lamented the fact that the collective bargaining agreement limits teams to 11 hours of work during training camp so he could not address these issues in greater depth with the team until the morning.

Im not going to have high standards for what theyre capable of, McVay said. Theres going to be a lot of mistakes. Its the repetitive ones. Its when we get a little bit tired and youre not really thinking and its stuff that weve done over and over again.

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald received a veteran rest day on Tuesday. Outside linebacker Ochaun Mathis tweaked his knee on Monday and will be out for a few weeks, McVay said, while receiver Ben Skowronek was held out on Tuesday due to a sore back.

Ogwumike now has 5,691 points as a Spark, trailing only Lisa Leslie (6,263) after surpassing Parkers 5,684. Ogwumike also played in her 344th game, tying DeLisha Milton-Jones for the second-most games played behind Leslies 363.

I feel very blessed, Ogwumike said. I dont want people to think Im not appreciative. Its just Im not aware of a lot of these things but Im very grateful and very blessed, especially to be in a Sparks uniform 12 years doing this.

Ogwumike expanded on the milestone before tip-off: For me, I just like being in the moment. Thats what I try to focus on. Im just very grateful to be in the league at this time, 12 years in, healthy, being able to play with my teammates and especially those who are making names for themselves in their career (motioning at Sparks starting point guard Jordin Canada). And to do it all in a Sparks jersey is certainly an honor, and to be in the conversation with people like Lisa (Leslie) and Candace (Parker). Thats not anything that I really anticipated coming to this team (in 2012) but Im very, very grateful to say that Im still here, hopefully contributing to the history of this organization.

Im not the same caliber as Nneka so I feel funny saying this but Im really proud of her. It takes a lot to do that and she is consistent, especially this year. Her numbers are off the charts and its almost casual. Shell have 15 at halftime and thats consistent. Its kind of not talked about enough and its just a thing that she does, but it is excellence and Im proud of her. Im not surprised though because thats the human she is, added Sparks forward Karlie Samuelson, who was first introduced to her when her older sister Bonnie played with Ogwumike at Stanford.

Jordin Canada added 13 points and six assists, and Layshia Clarendon scored 11 points for the Sparks (9-17).

Courtney Vandersloot scored 20 of her season-high 23 points in the second half and added seven rebounds and six assists to pace the Liberty (20-6), who closed the game on a 10-2 run to beat the Sparks for the second time in three days. Breanna Stewart added 16 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, while Sabrina Ionescu scored 11 points and Jonquel Jones had nine points and eight rebounds.

New York trailed 54-50 entering the fourth quarter before holding the Sparks to 15 points in the final 10 minutes.

Obviously, not the result that we wanted but the fight that we wanted, Sparks coach Curt Miller said.

Canadas floating jump shot pulled the Sparks within 61-60 with 4:48 left, before a Clarendon 3-pointer tied the score at 63-all and an Ogwumike layup gave the hosts a 65-63 lead with 3:31 left.

The Liberty regained the lead on a Vandersloot 3-pointer, but Ogwumike made two free throws for a 67-66 lead with 2:58 left. New Yorks Betnijah Laney made one of two free throws to tie the score with 2:37 left, then Laney and Vandersloot made back-to-back layups to extend the margin to 71-67 with 1:08 left. A pair of Ionescu free throws made it a six-point lead with 15.1 seconds left.

Ogwumike, who added eight rebounds, scored with 14.1 seconds left for the Sparks only field goal in the final three minutes, then Vandersloot and Ionescu made three of four free throws from there to ice the game.

The Sparks were coming off an 87-79 loss on Sunday, in which the Liberty made 15 3-pointers.

Id say that we put together definitely five, at least six good quarters (against New York), Ogwumike explained. I think weve learned from how we started the first game and with a team like that you cant start that way but its kind of been a theme for us, is just starting with more energy.

We have the want to, we have the determination and the belief but we need to turn all of that into real confidence and just having a little bit of swagger. I think thats what we saw (Tuesday night) and we want to definitely build off of how we feel. For me, I play for intangibles so you can run as many plays as you want to, you can throw all these different schemes out but its not going to matter if youre not locked in with the people that are out there. I think thats what we realized in these last few games at home.

The Sparks began the game with a measured approach and led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter, stepping up defensively to hold New York to 18.2% (2-for-11) shooting from behind the arc.

We have to come out and be more aggressive and make sure were disrupting their flow, Canada said before tip-off.

Midway through the second quarter, the 5-foot-6 Canada, the teams defensive sparkplug, stood tall against 6-6 center Jones and forced a shot-clock violation.

She switched and in rotation, she finds herself on a big and she doesnt let that affect her and she helps get a big stop. Cant say enough about Jordin.

The Sparks led 34-32 at halftime after both sides shot 37.5% from the field (12 for 32).

We believe in the game plan that we have set forth. Theres a lot of buy-in in that locker room, Miller said before the game.

After scorching the Sparks from the perimeter on Sunday, the Liberty shot just 22% (8 for 33) from 3-point range in the rematch.

The Sparks signed former UConn guard Evina Westbrook to a seven-day hardship contract on Monday, giving the team a healthy 10-player rotation for the first time in more than a week.

The Sparks will play back-to-back games at the Washington Mystics on Friday and Sunday, before concluding their three-game road trip at Indiana next Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES In the history of trade-deadline deals, its likely no pitcher has ever been afforded a softer landing with his new team than Lance Lynn had on Tuesday night.

Facing the stripped-down, ready-to-move Oakland As (on pace for 117 losses this season), Lynn gave the Dodgers their longest start in nearly six weeks and the Dodgers cruised to a 7-3 victory.

Its what we needed, said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who hadnt sent a starting pitcher out for the seventh inning since June 20. Seeing him on the mound, its what youd expect. Its what we saw from the other side. He was a pro, efficient, attacking the zone, made pitches when he needed to.

Its been quite some time since weve had a starter get through seven. Its just what we needed.

The arrival of the now 30-78 As is a good prescription for a successful finish to a homestand that has started with two series losses (to the Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds) and a stretch of five losses in seven games overall before Tuesday.

If the Dodgers failure to land a bigger prize at Tuesdays deadline disappointed many, at least Lynn did not in his debut for the team.

The burly right-hander held the As scoreless through the first five innings, working around one-out doubles in the third and fourth innings, and gave them the kind of lengthy outing they have rarely seen from a starting pitcher this season. Lynn was the first Dodgers starter to even pitch into the seventh inning since Clayton Kershaw threw seven scoreless innings against the Angels on June 20. It was the 10th time in 105 games that a Dodger pitcher completed seven innings.

Bulldog. Competitor. Wants the ball. Doesnt want to come out of games. The results tonight were pretty much spot on, Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman said of Lynn. Ive faced him for a long time. I remember facing him when he was with the White Sox earlier in the year, he still has really good stuff. Its nice to have him on our side.

That the Dodgers were unable to bring more reinforcements, particularly for their starting rotation, before the deadline doesnt really register in the clubhouse, said Freeman, who had four hits Tuesday.

We feel good. We love our team, he said. We had a first-place team going into the day and we have a first-place team coming out of tonight. We love the team we have.

The Los Angeles version of Lynn retained some of the bugs in the Chicago version. He gave up three home runs solo shots to Zack Gelof in the sixth inning and Brent Rooker and Jordan Diaz in the seventh very on brand for the MLB leader in home runs allowed this season (31).

We won. So it was good. Thats all that matters, Lynn said, adding that there hasnt been time yet for the Dodgers staff to offer any suggestions on adjustments he might make.

To be honest, we just started talking. Will (Smith) and I have a little history with the WBC so we kind of know each other pretty well. So right now, its kind of hit the ground, do what you do and well kind of figure it out as we go.

Kiké Hernandez has been here the longest of the Dodgers trade deadline acquisitions and has already started to make some adjustments. They paid off in the fourth inning after As starter Ken Waldichuk loaded the bases, then hit James Outman with a pitch to force in the first run of the game.

Tayler Scott replaced Waldichuk and left a 2-and-2 fastball to Hernandez over the heart of the plate. Hernandez drilled it at 105.9 mph off the bat and over the head of the left fielder for a three-run double.

I guess I just created some really bad habits over the last few years and were trying to clean that up, said Hernandez, who is 4 for 13 with a pair of doubles since rejoining the Dodgers. Were getting to a better spot, to where it allows me to get my not necessarily my A-swing off on a daily basis but to get me in a better position to drive the ball more consistently.

I feel like the last couple days in Boston, I started swinging the bat better. But since I got here, we started locking it in on the mechanics. From just watching video the last couple days, it looks better than what I was doing over there. Just keep building off it.

Betts doubled in the eighth inning and scored on Freemans fourth hit, an RBI single. The Dodgers finished the night with seven hits and nine walks.

This friend was someone from high school with whom she really had no relationship, but Paulson was feeling lonely and isolated as a stay-at-home mom, so she agreed to get together for a glass of wine.

Thats how Paulson stumbled into multilevel marketing (MLM) and it dominated her life for six and a half years. Sometimes called direct marketing or pyramid marketing, MLMs derive their revenue from non-salaried contractors who sell the companys products or services to friends and family. The contractors earnings come from a multilevel commission system in which 96-99.7 percent of people selling for MLMs lose money. While Paulson was one of the few MLM success stories, it ultimately led to addiction and compromised her physical and mental health.

This is the pretty much true, absolutely ridiculous, definitely catty story of my life in an MLM, but its more than that, writes Paulson in Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing. Its also about how MLMs operate, their role in the lives of suburban women across the United States, and the belief systems, systemic racism, and White supremacy that course through their trainings, marketing, and one-on-one interactions.

Paulson, who now lives in central Oregon, writes that it took her a long time to gather the guts to write this book. She didnt want to offend people she loves and some part of her believes that working for an MLM wasnt all bad, but if you keep reading, she writes, youll probably disagree.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Q. Why were you susceptible to the lure of MLMs?

I was looking for an escape outside of the mundane nature of being home with a bunch of kids and I was looking for a connection. Oh, heres a whole community. I was looking for money. Oh, you can make millions from home. Id love to get away. Oh, we have all these trips you can go on. Thats really what roped me in. Its vulnerability that makes people really primed for these MLMs.

Q. Your 2019 memoir, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, is about trauma, excessive drinking, disordered eating, and recovery. Much of your addiction took place while you were a top seller for an MLM. Were those two parts of your life feeding off each other?

Once I joined the MLM, the wine was really linked to meeting with friends, talking about products. When I had a couple of glasses of wine, I could send messages, texts and DMs that I probably wouldnt have felt comfortable with otherwise. The more success I had, the more opportunities I had to drink because I was going to parties and retention events. It was this vicious cycle.

Q. What inspired this book shifting the focus from you to this larger issue?

After the first book, I realized that being vulnerable and honest can help a lot of other people. And realizing that I was complicit in this system that does hurt a lot of people, I wanted to be just as loud on the other side. This is information I wish I would have known.

Q. Was there anything you discovered during your research that surprised you?

I didnt realize how much money politically was tied up in MLMs. I didnt know it was a $200 billion industry. In an MLM, youre taught its your small business, its just youre supporting your neighbor, supporting your friend, but these are huge corporations.

There are lobbyists, there are politicians who get money from MLMs. Even the United Nations gets money from MLMs. So theres no incentive for the government to investigate them.

Theres a body called the Direct Selling Association. Its self-governing and self-serving. Its like the NRA being in charge of gun control. You have the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) investigating things, but its a very slow process. Theyll shut one MLM down, but then five more pop up. Its like this game of Whac-A-Mole. And if they do get investigated a lot of times, it is the independent contractors, the consultants themselves, who are affected. Its not the companies that suffer, its the women, mostly women.

Q. Reading the book, I couldnt help but think that being in an MLM is like being in an abusive relationship, where the abuser isolates you further and further from your real life. Does that seem accurate?

Absolutely. You have to pay to get in so youre in debt when you join and you have to earn your money back, which most people never do. And then youre blamed for it. If you dont get any customers, you didnt work hard enough. If you quit, you didnt work hard enough. Theres always something that you can be blamed for.

One thing people ask is, Why didnt you leave when you figured out it was bad? Because its never all bad. Theres always something good thats keeping you in and maybe leaving will be worse in some way, either financially, socially, emotionally.

Q. You write that once indoctrinated, you eventually ignored your own intuition and went against your values. Why do you think you allowed that to happen?

Part of the reason was I was drinking a lot. And it was being confirmed for me that what I was doing was working. I was successful so I thought that even if people say this seems culty or weird, or its a pyramid scheme, its working for me.

Then, you find out its not going to work for everybody. Its like the worst parts of capitalism, pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps American Dream. Its unpaid labor and youre hoping eventually youll make a sale or recruit somebody. But many times you dont.

Q. You write that most MLMs are founded by White men who remain at the top of corporate leadership and on corporate boards, while women are the sales force, recruiting, selling products, and being exploited. What does that say about progress or the lack of it for women in America today?

Its a very misogynistic industry. The avatar of an MLM is a 42-year-old White woman with 2.5 kids. Its not diverse and its upholding this capitalistic, White supremacist idea of what an ideal woman is. And youre supporting the patriarchy. Its, Be this certain woman, work as hard as you can to get to the top of the ladder, but even when youre there, all youre doing is elevating these corporations under the guise of having a small business.

Q. You spent six years hustling and making money for the MLM, at the expense of your physical and mental health, and important relationships. Did anything positive come out of your experience?

I met some amazing people. I got to travel. I did earn money. I got to do a lot of public speaking. But Im not one of those people who says everything happens for a reason. The things that are good about it werent because of the MLM. It could have been a different non-MLM company.

Q. Any advice for women currently in MLMs?

If youre reading this and feeling defensive, ask whos benefiting from the work youre doing, whos benefiting from the money youre making. Get your information from someone other than your upline [the person who recruited you into the MLM]. Do a profit and loss statement. Protect yourself.

I seldom drink these days, so I felt pleasantly woozy when I got home. I even had transient feelings of love for the offspring who was causing me grief, although that quickly passed.

And my small buzz reminded me of the first time I was ever drunk.

Now, I dont know if you personally have ever been soused, but heres the thing: It sneaks up on you, right? The first time you drink too much, you are likely to get stupid drunk, because you dont know what that feels like. There are no trigger warnings until its too late.

As a teenager, I lived on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. My father was stationed there with the Air Force. The purpose of our base was to keep a fleet of B-52 bombers available in case they had to dash over and bomb Cuba. This was shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis, so this seemed like a real possibility.

While I was in high school there, I developed a small crush on a ridiculously handsome College Guy named Rick. During the summers, he worked as a lifeguard at the pool, and we got into the habit of chatting daily. Im pretty sure he had no idea about my crush, because, as I mentioned, he was a College Guy, i.e. way out of my league.

All the college-age kids would leave the island to go to university in the States, but theyd return for summers and holidays. So Rick went back to college after the summer, and I didnt see him again until he came home for the Christmas break.

I ran into him one day shortly after Christmas, and he invited me to a New Years Eve party being held sans parents at the house of another College Kid. It wasnt a date. Just an invitation.

I wafted home 10 feet off the ground, in love with the idea that a College Guy had invited me to a party. This was the pinnacle of my lifetime social achievements at that point.

So, on New Years Eve, I l told my parents I was going to the teen center, knowing that never in ten hundred gazillion years would they ever let me go to a party with college kids.

I walked to the party none of us had cars and you could walk everywhere on the base and arrived to find Rick already there. With a pretty college girl as a date.

My life as an innocent ended at that moment. Crushed and devastated, I contemplated leaving, but then a couple of other partygoers invited me to dip into the large bowl of Planters Punch.

Now, I dont know if youve ever had Planters Punch, but its as sneaky as awell, its just sneaky. It tastes deceptively like ordinary punch, but it actually has two types of rum in it, including one thats particularly deadly to brain cells.

Rum was exceedingly cheap in Puerto Rico because they grow a lot of sugar cane and make it there, especially on an Air Force base where you didnt pay any federal tax, so thats what everyone drank.

I wasnt a stranger to rum. My friends and I had been going off-base for some time to rum shacks, where no one cared how old you were and the rum-and-Cokes were strong. But Id never had more than one. Im sure it goes without saying that the parents had no idea we did this. Usually, mine were asleep by the time we got home.

So I stayed at the party, drinking rum punch, chatting with the College Kids and generally feeling like quite a social success.

Then the world started spinning and my vision blurred. I had no idea what was happening. And I suddenly had to empty my stomach. I stood up shakily and stumbled to the only bathroom (those houses were small). It was occupied. I kept knocking insistently, attracting everyones attention.

Just as the occupant finally opened the door, my mouth opened and yep. You guessed it. Ill spare you the sordid details. I was stunned and mortified.

I looked up and, to my horror, there was Rick. He had taken his date home and returned to spend time with me.

Instead, he helped clean me up and suggested that he should drive me home. Which he did, and he was a perfect gentleman. When I got out of his car, I was somewhat concerned to see the lights still on in our tiny living room, which meant that my parents had not gone to bed.

There was no way I could get to my bedroom without walking right past them. Well, the alcohol fumes reached them even before I did, and I spent the next hour being grilled about which college kids were having this party and how did I get invited?

My dad wanted to go over there and break up the party and maybe break up a couple of the guys, too. I kept telling them that no one tried to take advantage of me, and if they made a scene, I would jump off the cliff near our house.

Finally, they let me go to bed. In the morning, I was grounded for life. But I didnt even care, because Id never felt so sick in my life. Being eaten by crocodiles seemed like a good solution to make my head stop pounding.

My parents never believed me when I told them it was the first time Id ever been drunk. They figured it was just the first time Id been caught.

Our relationship deteriorated after that episode and didnt really improve until I went away to college myself.

And, sadly, I never saw Rick again. Maybe he saw me and ducked out of sight. I dont know. But like most embarrassing incidents, it eventually turned into a funny story. I still like rum today.
